Selecting Your New Homes Location
Your
new house must be somewhere. The question is, where? Use a good map to
identify areas you would consider based on distance to work and other
family activities. Decide what is acceptable to your family.
Take your time in making this decision. Many details about your new
home can be remodeled in later years as your lifestyle evolves, but
changing the location is not one of them. Does your lifestyle fit best in
an urban, suburban, or rural setting? This choice is a matter of
lifestyle and attitudes, not a matter of right or wrong. If you are new
to the area, you may need to do some exploring. Within the areas you
ultimately select, any or all of several types of lots may be available.

Selecting
Your Custom Home Team
Building a custom home is an exciting experience. A great deal
of your time, thought, and personality will go into the design and
specifications as your housing ideas come together to form a home
that is uniquely yours.
To accomplish your goal, you might engage professionals from
separate organizations. In addition to establishing your budget and
selecting a builder, you may engage the services of an architect, an
interior designer, a landscape architect, and a real estate agent.
Often one team member leads to the rest through referrals. An
architect whose work you like may recommend a builder or a builder
whose quality meets your standards may suggest an architect, and so
on. Request Stock Item Lit002
The
Design-Build Advantage
The design-build approach to building brings together professional
design and construction expertise. One company handles both design and
construction, which means you enjoy greater continuity of service. This
joining of the design and construction functions also can save you time
and money, and helps make you – the customer – more of a partner in the
construction or remodeling of your home. Request Stock Item

Designing Your New Home
Home
has a unique meaning for each of us. In planning your new home, you need
to analyze the needs of your household, considering work, school, hobbies,
entertaining and holidays. What lifestyle changes do you expect in the
next 5 to 10 years? Identify characteristics you equate with quality.
Consider aesthetics, function, maintenance and environmental impact.
Compile notes and collect ideas for each area of the home. The list
below offers a starting point. Your challenge is to include the features
you love, avoid those you dislike, and accomplish all this within your
budget. The items on your wish list may have arrived there without regard
to cost. During the design process your budget will guide you in setting
priorities and making final decisions. Your home may not have all of the
items listed below, and it may have items not on the list.

The Building Contract
“Whereas
the party of the first part hereinafter witnesseth…” The contract
legalese that confounds and sedates us was written by and passed down
through generations of attorneys and judges. The time-tested phrases,
already interpreted in the courts, have predictable meanings. Rewording
these traditional phrases into everyday English would require
reinterpreting them. Rather than risk surprises in court, we all endure
the legalese. In spite of this, read the documents associated with
planning and building your home, or ask your attorney to review them. If
you have questions, get answers before you sign. Request Stock

The
Building Process
From the moment you decide to build, a natural question is, “When can
we move in?” Understandably you are anxious to see dirt moved and walls
erected. That move-in date can’t come too soon. However, in the initial
stages of the project, the delivery date is a moving target because of
factors beyond a builder’s control. Request Stock Item Lit006
